Eggless Masala French Toast

DSC00534

French toast is a very popular american breakfast dish . With the blend of bread and eggs, its a perfect combination of carbs and proteins which you require to kick start your day! :)

I had once dropped by at a friends place early in the morning. She was just getting her kid ready for school and preparing breakfast for him when I arrived. After all the nagging and crying and excuses for not eating breakfast, she somehow got her son to have his breakfast and then run for the school bus. The smart kid that he was, he wanted to share his breakfast with me so that he can escape it.

HE: :!: Aunty, will you share this french toast with me? My mum makes it really well!! :)

ME: No dear, you go ahead otherwise you will get late for your school. I will have it later with your mum. :)

HE: But you can atleast take half from me so that I don’t feel bored eating alone. :)

ME:  Actually you know what? I don’t like eggs. ;) So you finish this and I will eat something else. :)

HE: But you got me a cake last time, and I heard you telling mum the recipe and I remember you mentioned eggs in it. Then how come you eat cakes and not french toast??!!!

SIGH!!!!!

ME: Oh That!!!! I mean I eat egg’s but only hidden eggs! I don’t like it like this (I said pointing it to the french toast of which he had barely taken a bite!!! )

HE: OH !!!!! Then do you want to hide below the table and eat the toast with me??!!!

HUH!!!!!! Kids !!!!!!!!!

This simple breakfast dish is easy to prepare and keeps you filled for a long time. We enjoy this as a light meal as well! :)

You will need:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

  • 4-5 bread slices
  • 1/2 cup rava/sooji
  • 1/2 cup yogurt/curd
  • 1 finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 tsp ginger chilli paste
  • salte to taste
  • corriander
  • oil to cook.

Mix all the ingredients except bread and oil and make a thickish batter.

Remove the bread corners (optional!!! I prefer keeping them on. ) and cut them diagonally.

Coat the batter generously over the bread slices and cook on a tava till golden brown on both the sides adding a bit of oil as required.

Thats it!! :) Serve with ketchup or your favourite dip!! :) Enjoy it as a filling breakfast or as a light meal as well. :)

Not sure if I’ve seen a similar recipe earlier … it’s a revelation, nonetheless. I always thought French toast was sweet!

Yup. The traditional french toast is sweet. Not that I have had it ever, but have read about it. :)

  10. sandeepa on June 13th, 2007

No eggs in a french toast…you should surely hide under the dining table ;-)
Next time come up with “No eggs in my Murgi ke Aaandey” ok ?

But this indeed is a god variation, I thought you would use Besan but I don’t like the one with Besan, too oily. This one is better

Hahahaha……. french toast is because of the similarity in which it is made. :)
Anyways, whats in the name??? ;)

  11. archana on June 13th, 2007

    Hi Coffee,

Do check out my page. I owe you one :)

  37. Ramya on June 16th, 2007

Hey, I have a Q here… didn’t the coating stick to the tava when you put them on? I tried a similar recipe few weeks back and it stuck to the tava real bad and they refused to come out

If you use a non stick pan then it shouldn’t be a problem. And if you are not using non stick then just put some oil first and then lay the bread pieces. :)

  38. prema on June 16th, 2007

A must try one Coffee. making a toast with rava and yogurt ,without eggs is a good idea. thanks for the recipe.

  39. Vani on June 16th, 2007

Hi Coffee! That eggless french toast looks yum! My mom sometimes dips bread slices in dosa batter to which she adds onions/cilantro/green chillies. Your toast reminded me of that.
Hope you are doing well, R. It’s been a long time since I caught up with you.

Will go so well with Coffee
