Sakariya nu Shaak
Nupur’s event A-Z of vegetables is about cooking with vegetables from each alphabet every week. So far, from all the recipes that I have sent her with the alphabets for that week, none depict the vegetables from that alphabet, mostly its to do with the type of cooking. ![]()
I started with K for Khichdi and Kadhi - Neither of them being vegetables!
Then it was M for Missi Roti - not even a hint of vegetables in it!
I broke all rules with O for Original Muthias!!!!
Then it was P for Pid-za!
Q for three quick recipes !
For T, I added Tropical before my coconut sorbet and made it Tropical coconut sorbet!
I was waiting for Y to come when I can send her Y is for Yam - saving my face for once at least!
Something didn’t seem correct and I googled for Japanese Yams which I use but to my surprise they were nothing close to what I was using!
I was actually using Japanese Sweet Potato as Japanese Yam as I have always seen them being sold as Yams over here!
There is a huge difference between them both and I was not the only one with this misconception.
In “gujrati” we call this tuber as “ratalu” which is the purple variety or “sakariya” which is the white one.
Its something to feast on while fasting but great to enjoy otherwise as well!
- 2-3 Sweet Potatoes, diced
- 1 cup crushed peanuts
- 1 cup yogurt
- 1 inch piece of ginger grated
- 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
- salt to taste
- 1 tsp sugar (optional)
- 1 tbs oil
- 1/4 tsp hing
- 1 tsp jeera/ cumin seeds
- 4-5 curry leaves
- 1-2 slit green chilies
- coriander to garnish
Heat 1 tbs of oil and brown the jeera.
Add curry leaves, slit green chilies and 1/2 tsp hing to it.
Now throw in the crushed peanuts and cook for about 5 mins till they roast.
Add the diced sweet potatoes, salt to taste and garam masala. Cook for about 5-10 mins till the potatoes soften a bit.
Now add the yogurt and cook for a few mins till it all blends together.
If you like the curry version of it, increase the quantity of yogurt and add about 1/4 glass of water and cook till you get a good boil.
If you prefer a dry side dish, cook till all the yogurt gets absorbed.
Add one tsp of sugar (optional) and garnish with coriander.
Serve with any breads. When people have this during fasting, they either eat it all by itself or with moraiyo. But I am not fasting and neither have I ever. So I enjoy this with my chapatti. ![]()
If you have been following my blog regularly, you will know how much I hate rolling the breads. So chapattis are also not a regular at home. But when I make them, I will usually make a few extra for a making rotli no ladvo - a sweet dish which I so love and its my reward for cooking chapatti that day. ![]()
All you have to do it break the chapatti into small pieces by hand. Add jaggery as per the sweetness you desire and enough ghee to make a lump.
For about 4-5 chapattis you need 1-2 tsp ghee.
Either throw it all in the food processor and churn them into a lump or work your arm muscles to mix and blend it all well to form a lump or ladoo.
So this is not my entry and I am surely not sending to Nupur. I don’t know any vegetable from Z, so if I have to save my face I will have to invent discover a zotato or zady zinger or may be a zabbage!!! ![]()

Lady,I am trying to get in your blog since morning and then gave up for few hrs, came back again. Now I get in to see 21 comments before me. I think it’s bcos of the heavy ghost readers traffic!!! It says loading takes too long and goes off!!
Loved all your A to Z entries. She says it’s okay if you use name of the dish,or else we can’t come up with most A to Z vegs at all.
Z is not hard at all. Watch out for Aroma dish on Monday, you will get an idea! ;D
One more I can think of is Zamikand which is Suran I think.Or you can zonk out on some Zotato dish!!hahaha!!
Love the shaak, laddu sounds interesting made of chapatis!! Cool!!:)
Hi Coffee..just wanted to say “HI”
Chapati laddu? Now that’s kinda new. I am used to eating chapatis rolled up with a lil ghee smeared and sprinkled with some sugar. Jaggery sure sounds like a better choice!
Coffee….

wow chappati laddu thats a great way for kids sure:) so last found the vege he he . the curry looks very good with sweet potato gotto to try this way
Lovely coffee, very interesting recipes. Viji
This whole yam vs sweet potato thing has me confused as well!! lol!
But this looks positively delicious. I suspect that the Japanese Sweet Potato is probably pretty close to the sweet potato we get here in Jamaica. The Japanese yam also looks somewhat like some variet of our local yam as well. I’m thinking that this recipe might be good with both the sweet potato and with our yam, so I shall be trying it with both!
Nice one coffee!!! YAY for YAMS!!!
I have never tried it with yogurt and garam masala combo….
Zotaot!! LOL!!!!!
Love the Roti ka ladoo! i make it by melting jaggery, and sometimes add khus khus. Mmmmmm!!!
Coffee, after reading this post, I just want to say… :???:
I love ya! Only you could make me crack up laughing on the day I was crying my eyes out — my baby son’s 19th bday! Thanks and oh, btw… yams look DELISH, Japanese or anyese
Hey those laddoos are great! And I’ll use the processor!!
The preserves post was great too! see you with the next post!!
Wow, Coffee u rock.
with a language and cooking abilities to the extreme. You just gave me the best time. I had looked around enough for the ratalu recipe which my husband kept insisting there was…
Also the Rotli no laadvo ? well, it was also served to the gods but in different ways (churma ? ) start a jhiva on that and lets see Nupur throw you out ? (she won’t. She’s equally as sweet as you are !!)
Bless you.
wow, great sweet potato curry ! the ladoo looks similar to the choorma ka ladoo that my mum used to make from leftover rotis by putting the ingredients in a food processor and then making ladoos out if it !
Laddoos with Rotis is really innovative… and it looks good.
I’ve never really cooked with Sweet Potatoes - must try your recipe sometime.
hi coffee,
Nice curry .thanks for sharing this recipe.
