Good one, Coffee! Indo-Chinese or Sino-Indian cuisine is a totally different league :-D isn’t it :)

    Its a different world ! ;)

  2. saju on August 11th, 2007

Love write-up. I have had chinese food in London, New York, Vancouver, Malaysia, Singapore and China.
The most unpallatalbe I have to admit was the one in New York followed by some I had in the Hunan province in China.
    Recipes look good too.

    Thanks Saju. :)

First of all woman, take that chop sticks away and give me a fork!!
Gobi Manchurian is very popular in B’lore, used to eat that a lot but never made it here though.I made a real Chinese dish for next week and one more for JFI .
Combo looks great.I think there are lot of vegetarian Chinese dishes you can make, just skip the non-veg!:)

Asha, eat the with chopsticks, and I insist! :P
Gobi manchurian is an absolute all time fav I must agree! Yes there are plenty veg chinese dishes to make. :)

Same experience for me too, Coffee! I had to search wide-eyed for any sea-food mixed in even okra  but then i started to like the buddhist-chinese vege dishes and char kway teow remains my fav. well anyway nothing to beat indo-chinese… oily, corn-floury whatever but tasty  oh! how much i miss singapore!

  6. Mishmash! on August 11th, 2007

I am drooling over the pics, they are fantastic…….the first time i had gobi manchurian was in banglore and after that i just cudnt get enough of it……

  9. Tee on August 11th, 2007

I want, I want….too delicious, MUST eat this
I remember the first time I went to a Chinese restaurant in the US and asked for Schezwan Fried Rice, proud that I knew so much, and then the waitress was horrified  to even hear the word, said that they did not have anything like this on their menu. Totally embarrassing for me

Hahahaha! I know what you mean by that…… We once asked for schezwan sauce in a restaurant…..the waiter poor thing didn’t understand and went and called the manager….. who also didnt understand and asked us to write it down!!

Coffee, that Manchurian and Fried rice make me crave for some Indian Chinese food right away looks terrific. I have to wait atleast 4 months for that :))
I did search for that Manchurian and American chopsuey in Chinese restaurants in the US, DH could not understand my excitement when I jumped on it with so much enthusiasam but uttterly despondent when I could not see them on the menu and one thing I could not get is it is America and there is no American Chosuey!!

Hahahaha! I can understand what you mean by that ISG.

  11. roopa on August 11th, 2007

i am drooling at those pictures. now i have stopped going to those stalls eek the first time i went saw hot dogs and fish balls and cake . seeing that i just i came running back until my colleague pulled me to assure it is a no meat stall and explained how they make it look for non veg who turned vege. But still i love those yummy dishes with rice and noodles whatever names they call it ha ha. one of my friend gave a hearty laugh when i told her Gobi manchurian was one of the famous dish sold in India:mrgreen:   ha ha.
Now i hardly go to the chinese stalls , just last week i saw a new punjabi stall open haila its just awesome :). chinese dishes as u say only home cooked for me too :) Both dishes look yummy, esp the manchurian hope my daughter doensn’t see this :) haven’t made it for a long time.

You bet!! I have an audience when I start talking about Indian Chinese!! They think I am coming from some other planet!

Coffee, did you have to post those pics when its lunch time here ! I dont want to eat the lunch I made, I want that plate of mushroom fried rice and gobi manchuria ! Simply mouthwatering…..

Iam in the same boat, chinese has to be homemade for me as we are vegetarians too and I just cant eat it outside unless I am in India !!

Need I say that I am going to try it real sooooon !!!

 You can have it off your monitor! ;)
Let me know how you like it. :)

  14. sandeepa on August 11th, 2007

Looks great Coffeee….ekdum Chin Chin Choon

BTW try that Veg Chicken sometime it really is awesome. One of my strictly Veg. Rajasthani friend took me to one and I was pleasantly surprised

I have two really good Indian Chinese restaurants near my place and one of them is run by a Chinese from Kolkata :) So I get to eat all the manchurian and chiili chicken I want but their Gobi Manchurian seriously lacks. That I think is because Gobi Manchurian is more popular in South India than rest of the part at least we never got Gobi manchurian in Kolkata when I was hogging onto them in B’lore.

I am allergic to soy remember?? I run into rashes…… and did so too when I tried tasting it once :(
You lucky girl!!! Indian Chinese restaurant near your place!!

  15. sharmi on August 11th, 2007

Hey Coffee, being a great fan of the Indian Chinese, I too have had hell lot of Bad experience here in US. Almost 5 yrs of my college life passed having fried rice and gobi manchurian. I craved like hell after coming to US and saw a chinese restaurant where it read veg fried rice and nothing to go with it but I thought something was better and ordered. It had no salt, chilli, just was plain white rice with some steamed broccoli and carrot. I didnt want to waste it so brought it home, fried it with some oil and seasoning. Tasted it  It still had the smell of all the raw veggies. It ended in the trash after being royally seasoned in my kitchen.
your pics drive me crazy. they are so beautiful and tempting. You did not add onions to ur rice? very lil ingredients surprises me. I have filled my pantry researching to bring out the right taste in my fried rice and noodles like ajinomoto , stri fry sauce, fried rice powder and so on…..
thanks for the very simple and great one. Going to try out this sunday.

I try to avoid MSG if possible…… and have never used any of these powders. I prefer is simple with just the flavouring from ginger, garlic, chili and soy sauce.

  16. sra on August 11th, 2007

C’mon Coffee, live a little - go try the fake chicken and duck - they’re quite nice. Your Gobi Manchurian (aka Kobi Manjoori, Kopi Manchuria, Gopi Manchuria) looks awesome!

I have tried it a few times Sra, and I run into rash since I am allergic to anything soy! :(

  17. arundati on August 11th, 2007

looks fabulous…..having turned vegetarian myself, i cant imagine having my chinis food made out of chicken broth!! ….i know what i am going to do now with that half head of cauliflower in the fridge……

Thanks Arundhati… Let me know how you liked it. :)

  18. Jyothsna on August 11th, 2007

I had authentic chinese food here and didn’t think much of it. Again I had authentic chinese in Singapore last year and that was the end of all the authentic chinese stuff I ever wanted to try! Gobi manchurian looks great!

    Haha…. I can imagine! :) Thanks Jyothsna.

Oh Coffee! Manchurian & fried rice are 2 of my fav ” Indian Chinese “dishes. I am not too fond of the real Chinese version.Like u, I too am a vegetarian.
Your pics look really good!I am going to bookmark this one & let u know how it turns out when I make it. Thanks!

  26. Laavanya on August 13th, 2007

Two favorite dishes of mine… esp. Gobi Manchurian. The mushroom fried rice looks really good coffee. I experienced the same shock at the Veg. Stall and since they look so similar to their actual ‘non-veg’ counterparts it was difficult. But I actually started liking the ‘mock-pork’ (of course before I knew that it was mock-pork) ! :)

  27. sharmi on August 13th, 2007

  30. Raaga on August 13th, 2007

Looks so yummy. I’m bookmarking this and will try it out very soon. But I do know the perils of being vegetarian in Singapore :-)

  31. lathanarasimhan on August 13th, 2007

    Hi coffee,

Your header with a brewing coffee is great. I just love good coffee. I have to say good as many people spoil this delicious drink.

The non veg name is enough to spoil my appetite. BTW your gobi manchurian looks yummy!

  32. Hima on August 13th, 2007

Hey girl, I too made them for my sunday meal. The gobi manchurian and veg. manchurian with some noodles. Love the indo-chinese food.

  33. sunita on August 13th, 2007

Absolutely mouthwatering… Love Chinese…we have quite a few authentic Chinese restaurants in Guwahati, run by a few chinese families, and the taste is simply awesome. ..

  34. Sig on August 13th, 2007

Oh wow… that is absolutely delicious…. and that mock stuff, I never get the idea! Who are they planning to attract with a mock hotdog? Vegetarians shouldn’t care if their dish looked like meat, and non-vegetarians can just have the real thing, so whats the deal!!! Anyway, who wants the restaurants when you can whip us such delicious looking food at home!!!

  35. maheswari on August 14th, 2007

my sis recently taught me how to make gobi manchurian. think i shud go for a mix of your recipe and hers!

  37. Nupur on August 14th, 2007

The pictures on this post are just gorgeous beyond belief! My hand is being pulled by those chopsticks
I had no idea that traditional Chinese cuisine does not chillies, ginger and garlic.
Just bought a wok, and I think gobi manchurian will be the first thing I will make in it!

  38. bharathy on August 14th, 2007

Coffee, Ask me about the the authentic Chinese restaurants here. As all of you I too love Indian Chinese and literally pestered my hubby to take me to a Chinese restaurant here inspite of the warning he gave me. Oh gosh!!! we went finally and I ordered what not as I had resisted my cravings for Chinese(Indian way) food for long then. I ordered full three course meal and just had a couple of spoons of all the dishes  which I had to keep up my image in front of my hubby. That was my first and last visit to the authentic Chinese restaurant here. Your Manchurian and the mushroom fried rice looks deadly Coffee. Love it. By the way how can you manage eating with those chopsticks? I always wanted to try eating with them but never was successful. Nice presentation buddy.

  40. Kanchana on August 18th, 2007

Wow! Great pictures, and I love the chopsticks, I NEED to try this recipe!!!

The mushroom fried rice & gobhi manchurian makes me wanna eat all that platter right now, but so sad “virtual reality” may never happen the way that I can just pick up the dish right off the screen - or will it happen some day??
