A Spicy Breakfast!
I doubt if there is any kitchen which will never have any bread in it…… and I doubt there will be any kitchen which will not have 2 days old bread. You don’t have the heart to throw it and have to think of ways to use it up.
In my house, one way it to use it up is Spicy Masala French Toast and other is……
Masala Bread
Cut the bread slices into 1″ X 1″ pieces.
Heat 1-2 tsp oil, splutter mustard seeds and brown jeera/cumin seeds. Add 1-2 chopped green chilies.
Add 1 small chopped onion and let it soften. Season with salt and 1/4 tsp turmeric. (Be careful with the salt since bread already contains salt)
Now add the bread pieces, 1/2 tsp turmeric and 1/2 tsp garam masala. Toss it all together. Sprinkle water and keep tossing…. continue this till all the bread pieces have moistened. (MOIST and not WET!!)
Cover the vessel and let it cook, tossing intermittently. I normally make this in a non stick kadai, covered and on a very slow flame. This will bring on the crispy texture on the outside and soft bread on the inside.
Once all the bread pieces become crisp and brown, switch off the gas and add 1/2″ piece grated ginger, juice of 1/2 lemon, 1 tsp sugar (optional) and toss again.
Garnish with chopped coriander and enjoy it hot.

Go ahead and make a mistake once, you will know how moist should moist be!
Just kidding….. all we want is that our bread pieces should not be dry. As soon as you cross that stage, that should be enough.
oofff…looks so good..
Thank you dear.
Dear Coffee, thanks for telling me what i should be making for my b’fast today! Yippeeeeeee! (does a lil’ dance).

Frankly speaking, I am hearing this bread upma for the first time from all of you guys! We always call this masala bread at home!
Coffee it has been ages since I made this. Thanks for reminding me about it… you know ladi pav? That makes the best bread upma ever!
U bet!! LAdi pav is the best for this! I miss that so much over here.
Hey Coffee…
We always comment after making bread uppuma, “Wow, we just ate a whole loaf of bread in one sitting. “
Crazy huh! But such a tasty recipe. Nice picture too!
Kanchana
LOL! We used to do the same…… so from now, I count 2-3 slices per person and make in small proportion. No matter what quantity you make of this, its going to go down in no time!
Bread upma is a favorite way of finishing off the leftover bread…your version looks mouth watering! throw away old bread
never, never….
One more bread upma! Thanks dear.
Thats my kinda bfast. Lovely photo.
A favourite at my place too.. Stale bread either goes for breakfast in this fashion or to the ducks in nearby garden

I make it the same way but mine never looks so lovely :???: Possibly coz I just put it in mixie or cut bread in a haphazard manner using hands in a hurry!
Yay! Bread uppma! Perfect way to use some leftover bread.
Cool! This looks really easy - and a bit like poha, but with bread instead of rice flakes. Yum…
great jhatpat breakfast and lovely use of old bread !
the bread has developed a nice color. I never get this color. thanks for the tips.
Masala bread?! The things I learn from you!
Hey Coffee, this is one of my fav ways of eating bread…you hardly know its even there  I add the salt, chilli powder and garam masala to some diluted buttermilk and toss and soak the bread in it for 5-10 mins(until the onions and chillies are chopped) I tried it the way you have mentioned once and made a mushy mess out of it
Coffee it is looking superb, will try your way  I lack patience to brown it on slow flame

Looks yummy… I haven’t had breakfast yet… except for an apple shake… can I come over?

Excellent Coffee !!! Will try this way. Mouth watering
Hi coffee!!!!!!
Masala bread looks yummy and mouth watering!!!!!!!! lovely breakfast recipe!
This recipe was just wonderful, Coffee! I just finished raving about it on my blog, after we tried it.
Everybody loved it, including the six year old who is frequently such a picky eater that we wonder whether she will starve to death. When the food was done, she went to the stove to peek into the kadhai to see if there was anything left in there so that she could have a little more!
This recipe is going among our favorites - the perfect way to use up that leftover bread, to have a very quick meal, and have it be absolutely scrumptious to boot.
Thank you again!
Breakfast at the Spice Café…
