Coriander peanut chutney

The word chutney …….. coming from a hindi word “chatni”, literally meaning “for licking”
And that’s what these tantalizing creamy…. some runny delicious, “by the side” combo of condiments do to your senses!
This chutney is always there in my house like any basic necessary ingredient. With the advent of technology, grinders make it a real piece of cake to make them but back in India these were made in the chutney grinding stone in my house.
The use of a stone chutney maker was is often regarded as vital to create the ideal chutney. It is a small stone bowl, or a flat piece of stone on which the ingredients are crushed together with a rounded stick of stone.
Notes:
- Peanuts can be substituted with dalia dal. The dal will make the chutney slightly thickish as compared to that with peanuts and seems to last a bit longer. (but peanut tastes better)
- The sugar will not make the chutney sweet, but it will help to balance the sourness of lemon… you can totally avoid it as well)
Ingredients:

- 2 medium bunches of coriander leaves
- a handful of peanuts
- 4-5 cloves of garlic
- 1 inch piece of ginger
- 2-3 small green chilies
- 1 small lemon
- salt to taste
- 3/4 tsp sugar (optional)
- Clean, chop and wash the coriander roughly.
- Grind the peanuts, ginger, garlic and green chilies first.
- Then add in the coriander, juice of 1 lemon, salt to taste and about 3/4 - 1 tsp sugar (optional) and run it all together in your grinder till it is a fine paste.
- Add water if required. (try to avoid if possible, unless you want a watery consistency)
- This will stay in the refrigerator for 1 week easily.

PS: Many have asked about MBP, but due to my excessively heavy schedule these days, I will not be able to continue with MBP for a while. Also, the entire post of MBP bread was waiting in my windows live writer and ready to be published, but since my laptop crashed it’s all gone!
(Yeah, I have a bad habit of not doing a backup regularly) Sorry!

Hi Coffee, Sat sri akal,
I just came to your Blog(after cooking lunch) and found this lovely tantalising chutney! How can any Indian home be without any chutnies, and this lovely green is so finger-licking good!
Btw, the container its in, is also so unusual. It looks like a “GERVI”(hope I spelt it correctly) Where did you find it?
Thanks for sharing, and hope life has come back its normal course for you now.
Take care,
Sat sri akal Mrs Singh, I got it from India. When I went last time, I saw my mum using this to set the curd. I loved it so much and got a couple of them for myself. They are made of clay with glazing on it.
nice idea to add peanuts. I don’t. Also, a pinch of jeera does magic to the flavor. Try it!
