Nutritious Poha

Weekend mornings are one of my favourites. I do away with all the instant oats or cereals and indulge in something hot and freshly made, mostly on the savoury side.

Weekday breakfast is rather boring for me with the same old oats and milk and some variations of fruits and nuts, but its still the same basic taste. Since we are both running even before the sun is out from its bath, it leaves very few choices for us.

So it’s no more of that mushy porridge on the weekends!

Weekends start with a late morning and filling up the tummy so that no one utters a word about food till 1.00 pm. It is usually a light filling meal like poha, masala french toast, masala bread, sandwich, idli and such.

We both love poha and it does come with a lot of variety as well in my house:

onion poha

potato poha

onion + potato poha

onion + peanut poha

onion + peas poha

onion + peas + peanut poha

onion + sweet potato poha

onion + sweet potato + peas poha

and today it was……..

onion + sweet potato + peas + peanut poha

For Onion + sweet potato + peas + peanut …….. or lets just call it “nutritious poha”:

  • 1 small sweet potato, peeled and chopped into 1×1 cm square
  • 1/2 cup peas
  • 1 onion chopped
  • handful of peanuts
  • 2 cups of poha
  • 1/2 red chilli finely chopped
  • 1/2 inch piece of ginger grated
  • 1/2 lemon
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1.4 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp curry leaves

Take about two cups of poha in a fine colander or use your flour sieve. Wash it under running water and let it drain for about 10-12 mins.

Heat oil in a kadai, pop mustard seeds and brown the jeera. Add curry leaves and run out of the kitchen…….. or, just cover the kadai so that the spluttering oil does not come and hug you. Tongue out

Now add the peanuts and roast till they take a very light brown color.

Add onions and chopped red chili. Stir till they soften

Now add in washed peas and chopped sweet potato cubes

Add salt (only half), mix, cover and let it all cook together.

In the drained poha, mix salt (other half), turmeric and garam masala powder.

Once the sweet potato softens add the poha and stir it all together.

Cover and let it cook for 3-4 mins.

Add juice of 1/2 lemon, stir and serve.

What a coincidence it is .
I made poha in very initial days of my blogging, sometime in oct 2006 , at that time it was my entry to WBB for theme “Twist in a plate” , and I gave it exactly the same name- “Nutritious Batata poha ” :) .
    Pics are wonderful.
I feel you even more like me now , Hugs to you .
    Stay tuned…
